Things For Heart Failure Patients To Remember

Take your medications every day as directed. If you are having problems with your medications, call your physician.

 

Restrict your sodium

  1. Remove the salt shaker from the table
  2. Use foods low in sodium
  3. Do not use salt substitutes
  4. 1000-2000 mg. of sodium per day is the recommended daily allowance

Weigh yourself EVERY morning after you use the bathroom and before you eat breakfast. Write it down.

 

Call your physician immediately if:

  1. You have more difficulty breathing.
  2. You are getting more fatigued with normal activity.
  3. You gain more than 2 pounds over night or 3 pounds over a week.
  4. You are more short of breath lying down or awaken at night short of breath
  5. You have swelling of your feet or legs
  6. You urinate less often during the day and more often at night
  7. You have a “bloated” feeling or upset stomach
  8. You have cramps in your legs
  9. You have blurred vision or see yellow-green halos around objects or lights

Go to the emergency room if:

  1. You have tightness or pain in your chest
  2. You are extremely short of breath
  3. You are coughing up pink-frothy mucus
  4. You are traveling and develop symptoms of worsening heart failure seek medical attention immediately.
